Why does my hunter breathe heavily in some situations?

Sometimes, particularly when I am fighting qurupeco and get hit by his spit attack, my hunter begins breathing heavily and exhales a green gas. It doesn't seem to affect anything that I can keep track of, but can someone explain to me what it means?

I first noticed something like this in Tri, with my hunter sometimes breathing heavily and exhaling steam for no reason. No matter what I put into Google, I've never found an answer. It doesn't affect my enjoyment of the game at all. I'd just like to know if I'm missing something, or if it is affecting my attack or something like that, or if I can remove the effect with a nullberry or deodorant.

Peco's spit, along with some bug attacks and jho drool will lower your defense, this is signified by a green gas, the sound you hear isnt the hunter's breathing but the gas coming out to show the lowered defense. As far as I know there is no way to get rid of it besides waiting it out. It doesnt usually last long

The_EnchanterTo get rid of the defense down, you can either sleep or eat an adamant seed.

ArarisMany thanks! I saw the double downward arrow in my status and was not sure what it meant, but it makes sense now! I'll start keeping a few adamant seeds on me if I find I take too much damage when I have this effect on me.

MackAlso defense lock is a skill that stops it altogether.
